Of course the machines speak
to each other We only translate whir to birdsong Then build machines to translate birdsong to speech I spoke into my machine It made a crumpled sound like music made me cry What hinges on almost Play a flute (the flute is a flute) Play with a flute (the flute is an actor) Almost an actor, almost speaking But should I talk about the axle of the resonating body Seven men, eight including the conductor and a single woman my heroine and I the villain for singling her out It leaves me cold to hear it meant to leave you cold but I didn’t hear it meant to leave you cold A person in the mask of a person I believe Each arm is a character One arm crumples cellophane The other arm laughs The other arm feels allowed to laugh provoking a second-order laughter: the laughter of relief at being allowed to laugh As if there were a menagerie just offstage the actor’s voice replaced with a different animal call every time he opens his Script for ensemble Sit in a circle holding a pressure gauge controlling a puff of air that keeps a balloon afloat Prevent the balloon from touching the ground Prevent the balloon from floating away Score for mouth Before an act believing is a talent Of course I believe this That’s how believing works Play a flute (the flute is a flute) Play with a flute (the flute is an accomplice) In the space between the sound and the ritual there was a plot Sampled and resampled And all that white noise The machine talking back Annelyse for DRAFF Heroines of Sound is an electronic music festival featuring the work of female artists including performance, video and discussion.
