Democracy in America directed by Romeo Castellucci is based on a text of the same name by French philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville, published in 1838. The play considers a number of themes presented in the text: American puritanism, the structure of democracy in relationship to a European aristocratic structure and its perils including the tyranny of the majority. The focus on the play seems to be a visual exploration of the text more than a critical or narrative reading. What results is a magnetic strangeness pointing to the distance of an anthropological viewpoint.
