documenta is a contemporary art exhibition that takes place in Kassel, Germany every five years. Much of the work is site-specific. The first exhibition took place in 1955, featuring artists including Picasso and Kandinsky and conceived as a riposte to the cultural darkness of Nazism. This year sees documenta's 14th edition, taking place in its habitual home of Kassel from June to September, but also with a second installment in Athens from April to July 2017.
